Magento Tutorials: How to Add Categories

One of the first things you should do when starting your store is to think about how you would like to organize your future products and create categories. Categories will not only help you keep things organized but also will make your store more appealing to visitors and have some SEO benefits.

For example you may have an online clothing and apparel store but should probably have categories such as TShirts, Shorts, Pants, Shoes, etc. so that not every product is assigned to one master category. You can also create child categories as well to further organize your Magento store.

  • To create you’re a category the first thing you will do is to navigate to the “Catalog” drop down menu at the top of your screen…

  • From here navigate to the link in the drop down menu that says “Manage Categories” and you will be taken to this screen where you can create a new category as well as provide a description for the category, upload an image, and set SEO features such as page title, meta keywords, meta description, and choose whether or not the category is active and should be included in the front end navigation menu.

  • Once you are satisfied with the information you have entered for your category simply click the save category button at the top of the module and it will save your category.

A few notes about the Magento categories:

  • If you would like to edit an existing category you can click on one of the categories located in the list at the left of the screen, make your changes and click save.

Subcategories can be created in several ways…

  • One way is to click and highlight on of your existing parent categories and then click the button that says “Add SubCategory”. This will add the new category as a sub category upon save.

  • Your second option to create a subcategory is to simply left click and hold your mouse on an existing category and then drag it into the category that you want it to be under as a hierarchy.

As your Magento store grows and you add products to your categories you will be able to view a list of all the products in a specific category by first highlighting the category and then clicking on the “Category Products” tab.
