You can take the site offline during maintenance and bring it back online when maintenance is complete.
- Login to the Drupal admin panel. Go to the Administer menu on the left. Click on the site configuration link. You can see the following options.

- Here click on the Site Maintenance option at the last. You can see the following window.

- Here you can set the site status. When set to “Online”, all users can browse your site normally. In offline only those people can access the website that is permitted by administrator. You can also set an offline message according to user’s convenience. Click on the save configuration option. Now when users will browse the site they can see the message on the screen and they will know that your site under maintenance.
